The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime maintains that South Africa’s border controls are not lax despite the country’s apparent links to an international drug syndicate. The Hawks have uncovered suspected ties between local companies and a massive heroin bust at London’s Heathrow International Airport last week. One hundred and sixty five kilograms of heroin was seized at Heathrow which sparked an investigation which saw South African detectives uncovering a drugs ring operating in Durban. Six people including three Britons have been arrested in South Africa another two were nabbed in the UK. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Jonathan Lucas says trans-national syndicates are big players in the drugs trade. “They operate like any business company like any multi-national company except that they are there dealing with drugs and human trafficking,” said Lucas - Eye Witness
