Kenya Airways to begin flights to Malabo

Kenya Airways will begin flights to Malabo, the capital city of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea.

The twice weekly flights will depart Nairobi every Tuesday and Friday at 1930hrs, airline executives said here on Wednesday.

Flight KQ528 to Malabo is via Douala in Cameroon where it will make a 50-minute stop before proceeding to Equatorial Guinea.

The return flight will take off from Malabo at 0010hrs (local time) and arrive in Nairobi at 0635 hrs (local time), the airline said.

“The introduction of flights to Malabo brings to 30 the number of African destinations that KQ flies to,” said Kenya Airways Chief Executive Titus Naikuni.

“Travellers on this route are expected to benefit greatly from the superb connections that KQ’s network provides to destinations across Africa,” he said.

Malabo is in Africa’s new oil exploration frontier in The Gulf of Guinea with the petroleum industry being the major contributor to the economy.

Equatorial Guinea’s population of 600,000 currently enjoys one of the highest per capita GDPs in Africa of nearly US$ 50,000.

Despite the global economic crisis, Kenya Airways officials said the airline would continue to invest heavily in expanding its network to cater for the growing needs of the African traveller.

Earlier this month, the airline commenced operations to Libreville in Gabon and the thrice weekly flights will provide huge benefits to the vibrant trading and mining sectors of Gabon.

The route expansion has been accompanied by fleet modernisation and a commitment to promotion safety and growing aviation standards in the continent.

Boasting one of the youngest fleets in sub-Saharan Africa, KQ’s 25 aircraft fleet is poised to deliver a superior flying experience and increased cargo capacity, according to Naikuni.

During the recently concluded IATA AGM in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kenya Airways was the only African carrier to receive a special award in recognition of its dedication to the IOSA programme.

IOSA (IATA’s Operational Safety Audit) was developed to provide focus together with global standards, coordinated approach and firm targets, with the aim of raising the bar on aviation safety.

Kenya Airways first received IOSA certification in 2005 and subsequently had the certification renewed in 2007.
